TV is a mom's best friend: Nani Gugu

Just recently, I found Valentina sitting VERY quietly in her room (aka TV room/guest room /my office/library).  If she's not making noise, I always peek my head into the room just to make sure she's ok.  I knew that her favorite cartoons weren't on so, I didn't know why she wasn't banging on her toys.

Apparently, she has a new favorite cartoon..

To be honest, I thought this was just a cute cartoon but I just read on the Nanigugu.com that there is an actual meaning behind this.  The cloud game is to get kids to use their imaginations while the two diverse characters are for promoting playtime without judgment of character or race.  If you'd like to actually read the series concept it's here.

1st Easter

Unfortunately, this is all I have to show for it. Valentina and I enjoyed our Sunday service at church. Valentina especially loved all of the attention she got. She always seems to get attention but this time, she was walking (with my help) and wearing her beautiful Easter dress. Needless to say, she got extra attention this time!

As soon as we got home, we changed our clothes and headed over to my MIL for lunch. With the excitement of Valentina eating with us, I forgot to take pictures of her and our food. She quickly fell asleep and we came home shortly after that.

But hey... I guess one picture is better than nothing!

Hope everyone had a blessed Easter!

On your Birthday

Dear Valentina,

Today is your birthday! You are officially ONE YEAR OLD!  This past year has been an amazing journey for all of us. It seems like just yesterday, that I was at the hospital getting ready for your arrival. Every night, we look at you while you sleep and we can't believe how incredibly lucky we are to have you. You are seriously the MOST BEAUTIFUL baby we've every seen. Every night, I lay down with you, give you kisses and whisper in your ear. Then I look at daddy and say, "Isn't she just the cutest thing ever?!?!" Of course daddy says, "She's wonderful."... and you are... WONDERFUL!

You make us smile, laugh and cry tears of joy all at the same time. You've gone from a small baby that wouldn't wake up to eat to non-stop, snack monster. You've reached certain milestones long before other babies but you also won't let anyone rush you.  The fact that you learned to wave at 5 months is wonderful, but you refused to sit up on your own until 6 1/2 months. 6 months, you were drinking from a sippy cup and opening your mouth when you saw a toothbrush. At 9 months, you started pulling your self up and decided that standing was better than sitting yet, you thought crawling was a bit tough and it took you a while to get the hang of it. Now at 12 months, you have 8 teeth, can drink from a regular cup, straw, and glass bottle and 2 days ago, you took 4 steps all by yourself.

You love to say:
"Mamma"
"Dada"
"Nnnna" (Nonna)
"mimi" (sleep)
"nah nah" (no, no)
"chi e?" (who is it?)
"hiyayayaya" (hi)

You love to look at the doggies in the morning. Every day before going to work, Daddy takes you to the balcony to see the doggies. You start panting like a puppy, wave your arms in excitement and then cry when daddy puts you in your crib while I make your bottle. We have breakfast together every morning while we watch cartoons. You're such a happy baby when you wake up.... you get that from your Daddy. I love the way your face lights up when you see your favorite cartoon, even better is the way it lights up when I come home from work.

In your first year, you've become a little traveler.  You rode the metro when you were 8 days old, and by the time you were 3 months, you had already ridden the train TWICE to visit the fashion capital of the world... MILAN!  In the next 6 months, you will add Naples, Texas, Minnesota and Scotland to your list as well as your first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth plane rides. You've had visitors come from the Texas, Minnesota, Ohio and Mexico all by the time you were 5 months old. You will be exposed to different cultures. You'll grow up in Italy celebrating American and Mexican holidays.  You'll speak American English while learning British English at school. Your Abuelos will teach you Spanish and Auntie Jill & Uncle Florent will teach you French.

My Sweet Monkey, there are so many things I want to tell you but it's late and we have a BIG day ahead of us..... Mamma needs to get to bed and snuggle up with you now.

Daddy and I love you SOOO MUCH.

TV watchin'

One down side to not having carpet is that our floor gets dirty easily.  One down side to living on the 9th floor and having the balcony doors open is that dust and bugs fly in easily. Our apartment gets dusty really fast and I'm constantly sweeping. Because of this problem, Valentina doesn't get to sit and watch TV or crawl around like she should. She has to get put into her crib or playpen. It's frustrating for all of us because I would love to have her crawl around but I can't be following her constantly.

When she does play on the floor she's always slipping and sliding with her socks and shoes and then falls and hits her head. Putting blankets on the floor only makes it worse because then she trips over them. Of course the obvious answer would be to get a rug but let's be honest.... she want's to be mobile (and of course the dust issue again) ...... I can't wait until she starts walking... things would be so much easier..

I think.

On the swing..

I have been dreaming of the day that I could put Valentina on the swings. I'm not sure why but I was really looking forward to it. A few month ago, Carlo and I took a walk to the park and luckily the swings were available! It was still cold so she was all bundled up and we sat her there and pushed her gently. She didn't know what to think at first and she did cry but after a while, she really started to like it.... to the point that she threw a fit when we took her out!

As you can see, she wasn't quite sure what to think...

She was bundled up so much that she could barely move but don't let the look on her face fool you.. she was loving it!

A month ago, we went back to the park and as you can see, she had a great time!

She's quite the little daredevil... swinging without holding onto anything!

I had my iPod with me so, I recorded a little video of her too!

Girly Girl.. sometimes

Before Valentina was born, Carlo and I often talked about what kind of baby she would be but more importantly, how girly girl she will be. We thought about the fact that Carlo's sister is a tomboy and we really hoped that Valentina would take after mom... and thankfully she has. She love accessories. Shoes, sunglasses....everything!

Remember when I wrote about making Valentina headbands? Well, now that it's spring, the headbands are coming back out. Unfortunately, this time around she pulls a lot of them off... but I'm able to get at least one good picture.

My mom got this awesome sunflower headband.. but she won't wear it!

I LOVE this hat... too bad she's only worn it twice! It's already hot but a few Sundays ago, it was cold so she was actually able to wear it.

I made her a patriotic tutu for the Unification celebrations and she LOVED it!... She loved pulling the tulle and breaking it too!

Lucky for us... she keeps these headbands on!

She's BAAAACK!!

We started the New Year on a good note. We had moved Valentina out of our bed and into her crib. (post here) She was sleeping great and would wake up for a feeding or just to be reassured that we were still around. Things were going great until it got cold.

Here's the thing about Turin or maybe all of Italy. There are 2 types of ways to heat your home. You either have Central heat or a Radiator. The city regulates when the heaters can be turn on and off for the season. Generally, the heat is turned on in October (usually on the 15th) and is turned off by the middle of March.  If the needed, they may turn it on early or turn it off late. Each apartment controls their heat but at the end of the day, it gets turned off for the night.

That means, you better have lots of warm blankets because the heat won't be back on until 6am. We live on the 9th floor (top floor) of our building. The water heater is in the basement, factor in gravity and we don't get very much water heating our place. In fact, our apartment is always cold... every winter. It doesn't get warmer than 60℉.

Since putting blankets in the crib with a infant is a big no-no... we brought her back in bed with us. We've gotten used to her being in bed with us again and now that Spring is here, it's hard to move her back.  We're trying but she keeps waking up because she doesn't feel us near her. I think this time, it's gonna be hard on all of us.

Daddy & V fell asleep holding hands...

Interview with Expat Arrivals

Since I'm trying hard to get TurinLove established, I've been staying up till 2 am every night working. Either blogging for MSM, writing for TurinLove, Tweeting, FBing or searching for forums to join.... it's been crazy!  A few night ago, one of my new FB (hope to be real life) friends posted an interview she did with Expat Arrivals. I thought I'd go ahead and give it a try too and now, it's posted!

You can read it here!

While you're there, check out my new friend Anna's interview too!
