Bardonecchia

Just an hour and a half from my fair city is Bardonecchia. A small mountain retreat in the Alps and quite possibly a hop, skip and a jump from the French border. Since Bardonecchia is in the Alps it is the perfect place for your Ski trip. Lucky for us, it wasn't ski season yet so the town was practically empty and most stores were closed.

Valentina usually gets excited when she sees a picture of an animal, however she wasn't too keen on this cow on skis. In fact she was kinda scared..

That is until daddy got a hold of her and then she was kissing the cow and saying 'moo'.

Everywhere you look, you see gorgeous mountains covered in snow. It was cold and windy but not enough to spoil the day.

The battery on my mom's camera died so, I was the designated photographer for the day. She really thought this little Gelato truck was cute so, I had to take a picture of it.

We walked for a while and made our way into the city. We located a church which I could only guess is probably the main church. We sat and rested our feet....while Carlo went inside to sneak a peek.

Someone really needed a nap and enjoyed it a lot. She was all bundled up and slept in the sun like a true Italian.

As I mentioned, since the city is practically closed there wasn't much to see or do but we managed to find a restaurant to have lunch before hoping back on the train. Valentina had a lot of fun walking with her Abuelos.

and of course playing with daddy.

Carlo and I were originally supposed to come during the summer when the city is hosting all of the hikers that arrive but decided to wait. I'm glad we did.

Verona

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean,
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes,
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;

Perhaps the most famous love story..... told in one of the most beautiful, poetic cities in the world. That of Romeo and Juliet which was set in Verona. This is probably one of my most fondest memories of High School. Reading this play but also having to memorize line for a grade. It still remains one of my favorite stories as well as one of my favorite movies.

While I'm not that far away from Verona, it does take some planning and money to make this day trip.  My parents wanted to take advantage of our easy situation so we I quickly looked things up, planned and purchased tickets.  Waking up at 5am is not my idea of fun. Neither is leaving the house at 6am to catch a 7am train. I was so exhausted and a bit stressed out in trying to make sure we got out of the house in time as well as make sure I had everything I needed for Valetntina. Baby #2 was doing some major break-dancing that I was feeling really bad. Luckily, by the time we got on the train, Valentina and I were able to fall back asleep and I was much better after some rest.

The majority of the train ride was spent keeping Valentina entertained with a pen and notepad. She had a great time making sure that we wrote on every page.

Since we went to Verona during the week, it wasn't full of tourists. The weather was perfect and it wasn't crowded. We basically spent the day just walking and soaking in the atmosphere.

Verona's Roman amphitheathre was built in 30AD and is still in use today. Every summer, the city hosts a serious of Operas here and one day I hope to be there!

Thanks to Mr. Rick Steves, We strolled along Corso Porta Borsari which was the main street in Ancient Verona and leads you to Piazza Erbe. This piazza has been the site of market vendors since Roman times. I made sure to get a picture of the Whales Rib that hangs in the Piazza and has been there for 500 years.

Valentina was so good during this trip that we decided to reward her with a balloon.  There were several options but this was the nicest one they had which is good because she likes Winnie the Pooh!

One thing that I was going to see before leaving Verona was Juliet's balcony. Now knowing that the actual story of Rome and Juliet is fiction, however several sources state that the story is based on a real life couple. There's also Juliets tomb which we didn't visit so, I'll have to do that next time.

I have never seen so much graffiti before and it was really quite impressive. Lovers names with hearts, written in all sizes and colors are written on the walls of the small passageway leading to the courtyard.

Juliet's balcony. For a small fee (6 euros.. i think) you can tour the museum and step out onto the balcony as well. I read somewhere that for those hardcore romantics can actually get married here but I'm not sure if that's still true.

Legend says that if you rub the breast of the Juliet statue, you will have good luck in your love life. Most of the tourists were just standing near the statue but this gal knew exactly what you're supposed to do!

Love locks and letters are ALL OVER THE PLACE. For 8 euros, you can buy a lock, write your name and place it on a fence, tree... basically anywhere. I almost bought one but decided to wait. I've already told Carlo that we are going to Verona and both of us will place a lock (that we'll bring ourselves) and place it in Juliet's courtyard.

Call me crazy, but I totally love this photo! I just love imagining all of the lovers who came to write their names on the wall.

After lunch we slowly made our way back to the train station. Valentina was exhausted and had a great nap only waking up after smelling some McDonald's french fries.

I will most definitely be going back to fair Verona.. hopefully for more than just a day.

The Grandparents came to visit!

My lack of Facebook-ing and also blogging for the last 2 weeks can only mean one thing... FAMILY IS IN TOWN!

My parents came to visit us for 2 weeks and even thought it rained everyday for the first week, we were busy out on the town. I was seriously exhausted every. single. day. In fact, Carlo and I joke that I can finally relax and rest... which is exactly what was supposed to have happen with my parents here.

It was no surprise that Valentina easily recognized them and didn't freak out for the fact there were here in person.. and not on the computer. She showed them her toys and books and after a few minutes was just acting as if she saw them all of the time.

I tried to take as many pictures as I could but I was constantly in the kitchen or just way too tired. However, I finally managed to get them to one of my favorite places....

Cinema Museum:

I've taken my parents to Torino's most famous landmark- The Mole Antonelliana but they've actually never been to the Cinema Museum which is what it's famous for. This is one museum I don't mind visiting more than once. If you look at everything, it takes about 2-3 hours to see it from beginning to end. I love being able to show people how fun museums can be... especially when it's about Cinema!!

The museum begins very scientifically by showing how our eyes see lights and images. Then it's onto photography, stills, slides, etc.. basically starting from the beginning of moving images to actual film.

Afterwards, it's the movie memorabilia and posters. Here you'll  see things like the MGM lion..

and photos of Marilyn Monroe.. along with some of her personal items

Then it's to the exhibition room. 3 floors of whatever the current exhibition may be. Right now, it's 'America America': works by Director Robert Altman. There are a lot of posters as well as photos from his film career. After the exhibition, there's one more part of the museum. There are several rooms where you can sit and watch clips of different movies. Valentina really enjoyed the animation room. (The room with the Wile E. Coyote door!

We took a couple of day trips while there were here as well but those will be featured in another post!

18 MONTHS!

Dear Valentina,

Forgive me for not writing this sooner but as I will explain, you're quite the handful and getting a few minutes out of the day let alone in the evening is next to impossible.

You're now officially 18 months! You're not the same little baby anymore. I can't believe how much you've grown in the last 6 months. You bring so much joy with your funny expressions and your sweet smile that I'm not sure how much cuter you can get.

I would love to sit here and list all of the funny things you do and say but I'm not sure I can capture it all.... But we're going to give it a try.

I think my favorite thing is getting you to make Animal noises. Doggy, Elephant, Monkey, Horse, Sheep, Cat, Cow and Croccodile are the ones you do best! I also LOVE that you growl at dogs when you see them!

Hopefully we'll get 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' started really soon. You've got head, eye, nose, mouth and feet down... we just need to work on the other parts.

You have so much energy that there are days when you DON'T take a nap. For example, last Saturday, you REFUSED to lay down with me and take a nap. You were on the go the entire day. I gave you a bath before we left for dinner. I thought you'd fall asleep before getting to Nonna's house but you were still awake. By 7pm you were tired but wouldn't give in. By 9pm you were running around on a sugar high. When we left, you didn't cry. You very happily put your coat and hat on. By the time we got home (a whole 10 minutes later), you were sound asleep. Keep in mind that you had woken up around 7:30-8:00am

It seems like you're willing to do that quite a bit lately and that makes it hard for me.. especially being 6 months pregnant. You play with anything and everything which means I'm constantly having to keep my eye open for things you've grabbed.

I hate having to put you in a playpen but that's the only way I can get a shower in. If I knew you'd sit still I would just put some Peppa Pig on but you have a bad habit of standing right in front of the TV then looking for one of mine or daddy's books to play with.

On this.... your 18th month, you had a rough couple of days around Halloween. I was really looking forward to dressing you up and taking some pictures but a fever and vomiting had us at home for 4 days. Those pesky (last set) molars did a number on you. You were shivering, and throwing up water and saltines. You didn't have a real meal until day #5. Luckily you recovered the day before Abuelita and Abuelito arrived from Texas. (Although those molars haven't cut through yet)

With visitors here, your schedule has gotten completely thrown off and there have been days in the last 2 weeks where you didn't get to bed until 23.00... or even midnight! You were having too much fun but now that Dodo and Abuelita aren't here anymore, I'm trying to get you back to a normal routine and it's not working. Therefore, causing me to stay up past 1am (as I type this) to finish this post that I started 3.5 WEEKS AGO!

My Sweet Monkey @ 18 months
I can't complain too much though... you're only this age once and by golly... I'm gonna enjoy it!
